“Gym goer” is the most basic way to refer to someone who works out. It’s good because it doesn’t specify gender or training style. It’s an inclusive term that simply states that somebody likes to work out.

Sometimes, you don’t even need to work out to be a “gym goer.” If a gym has a sauna or spa, you might be called a “gym goer” without ever touching a weight or cardio machine.

Athlete

“Athlete” works well in a specific sense. It works to talk about anybody who enjoys sports or physical exercise and is looking to better their ability rather than focus on muscle building as a general concept.

You will find that most athletes do training that goes against the conventional style that most gyms expect. They will pick things that will help them get better, faster, and stronger in their respective sports.
